My Pre-Release Review of Boomerang

From the HarperCollins website:
“The first book in a sensational New Adult trilogy from Noelle August.

Welcome to Boomerang.com, the dating site for the millennial gen with its no-fuss, no-commitments matchups, where work is steamier than any random hook-up.

Mia Galliano is an aspiring filmmaker. Ethan Vance has just played his last game as a collegiate soccer star. They’re sharp, hungry for success, and they share a secret.

Last night, Ethan and Mia met at a bar, and, well . . . one thing led to another, which led to them waking up the next morning—together. Things turned awkward in a hurry when they found themselves sharing a post hookup taxi . . . to the same place: Boomerang headquarters.

What began as a powerful connection between them is treated to a cold shower courtesy of two major complications. First, Boomerang has a strict policy against co-worker dating. And second, they’re now competitors for only one job at the end of summer.

As their internships come to an end, will they manage to keep their eyes on the future and their hands off each other, or will the pull of attraction put them right back where they started?”

Pre-order on AmazonBarnes & Noble or your local indie!

I received an advanced copy of Boomerang while attending RT Booklovers Convention in New Orleans back in May. I’m just now getting around to reading it but once I did, I tore through it.

Your Mid-Week Update for 06/25/14

I apologize for not responding earlier but I needed to take some time away from the world while I got my head on straight.

Last Wednesday morning I was called down to the local police station for quote “routine questioning”. I was more than certain that Sandra had called the police and told them everything.

And I was right. The police knew about all the recent murders but they couldn’t find any substantial evidence other than the word of a teenage girl pointing the finger at her guardian. They didn’t believe her but they wanted me to know. They asked a lot of questions about James.

When I got home I was…more than upset. I was enraged. I saw red and I blacked out. When I came to, Sandra was dead. She had a huge gash on the back of her head and the glass cabinet in the living room was shattered. I think I pushed her.

Apparently a neighbour heard shouting and phoned the police. They showed up and found Sandra’s body. And then they arrested James for all the murders. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ve taken Jason out of school. I’ve thought about going on the run. My niece is dead, my husband is in jail for a murder I committed. I just…I don’t

I’m kidding.

The meeting with the police went fine. They had some follow-up questions about a fatal car crash I witnessed a few days ago. No mention of Sandra or murder. Or James.

But it forced me to…face my mortality.

That’s been the theme of the week. Mortality.

I’m becoming more and more aware that there will come a time when the authorities do catch on to what I’ve been doing. Whether it’s Sandra, or a neighbour, or myself, they’ll figure me out and then life as I know it will be gone. It could be tomorrow, it could be ten years from now; I can’t keep killing forever. As much as I’d love to imagine myself as a little old lady offing other residents in a nursing home, I probably won’t last that long.

One of my first fights with James was about why I kill. About what would happen if I got caught. To him and to me. I remember telling him that I kill because I have no other choice. I kill because there is something in my blood (maybe from my mother; what I wouldn’t give to be able to blame her) that makes me need to kill; to take life away. It can be overwhelming. But I’ve always been good at controlling my urges. I don’t have a disease or a crippling addiction. I just like it. Sometimes I’ve even gotten off on it. It’s an adrenaline rush. Yesterday I killed a man who was pulled over on the side of the road…because I could. Because I wanted to. The whole way home I kept thinking, “what if I get caught?”

James trusts me to not get caught.

We never discussed exactly what he would do if I were to get arrested but last night, we sat down while the kids were out and had an honest discussion.

I made him promise that if I am ever arrested for murder, he will take the kids – I don’t care if they’re in their 30s when it happens – and he’ll run. It’s not ideal but it’s better than prison or the media.
The only reason I’m telling you this is because when the day comes for James to run, I need you to make sure he does. I know my husband. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for me (and I for him) including some pretty stupid things.

The anonymity and insane technobabble (that my sister never did explain to me) behind this blog keeps all of you safe from prosecution so to whoever is reading this: please, please keep my husband safe. He doesn’t read the blog but he knows it exists and he knows that this is a safe place. I’m trusting the internet of all places to keep my story alive.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go have hot sex with my husband while the door’s open so I can potentially traumatize my niece and nephew. It’s what normal families do, right?

As always, dear readers,

Your Mid-Week Update for 06/11/14

I have an update on the Sandra front. I spoke to James and he convinced me that it would be best to wait it out. Obviously he's right but I'm still anxious. Jason is still acting normally which is a blessing. Maybe Sandra has chosen to spare her little brother the anxiety of more family drama. One can only hope that she's seen sense on that front.

I'm almost certain that she knows my secret now. She continuously glares at me and I can see her finger twitching over the emergency call button on her phone. She knows. And she wants to tell but something is stopping her. I dare to think it's affection for me but in all likelihood it's self-preservation. If I'm gone, she and her brother are headed for foster care and she likes her cushy bedroom way too much.

Don't get me wrong, I love my niece and nephew dearly, but I'm being honest. I'm not in this situation out of love, I'm here because my teenage god daughter likes comfort more than she likes doing the right thing.

I'm so proud.

I'm glad that I've at least had an influence on those kids, I've practically raised them. Even before their mother went on "an extended trip" - as we initially told the kids - I was more of a mother to those two. Not to brag but I feel I did a very good job of raising two teenagers while working the equivalent of two full time jobs.

I’m not going for mother of the year but I’m pretty damn close and now, now the little brats are going to turn against me. Not anytime soon but it will happen.

As soon as they don’t need me anymore.

I knew that having children would force me to face my mortality but I never expected it to happen so soon. For the first time in a long time I don’t know what’s going to happen next.

Adding spontaneity to murder is one thing but to fear of your children (not just fear for them); it’s a whole new game.

I need a massage. And a spa trip for at least a month.

As always, dear readers,

Your Mid-Week Update for 06/04/14

Once upon a time there was a young woman who had a wonderful gift: she could tell how people were going to die. When her predictions didn't come true she would always do the deed herself because she was a woman of action and skill. She would wait on no man.

Except for Prince Charming.

Prince Charming was the coolest boy in the kingdom, every girl wanted to go to the ball with him but he could only pick one girl to be his queen. And he chose a beautiful girl to go with him to the ball. He did not choose our heroine; in fact Prince Charming hated the young woman. He would tease her and torment her on the streets. Unfortunately, the poor, naive woman was still in love with Prince Charming and was very distraught when she discovered that the Prince hadn't chosen her as his queen.

So she lured him behind the bleachers and beat him to death with a soccer cleat from the gym.

The entire village was so distraught at the prince's passing that they cancelled the ball.

Now no one could have fun.

The royal guards never found out who had killed the prince but the young woman never forgot how it felt to steal the dreams of an entire village. It was amazing. She wanted more. But before she could continue she knew she needed to know more.

So she, instead, looked backwards.

She remembered the stories her mother would tell her at night; the wonderfully awful stories that would later inspire her.

Of the Ireland Butchers who stole children from their beds and hacked them to pieces.

Of the woman who bathed in the blood of young women so she could stay young forever.

Of the Clown Killer who would bury children in the crawl spaces of his house, to be eaten alive by the rats and insects.

Of men who built castles of death and maiming for their personal enjoyment.

Of women who grow up to be serial killers and can only aspire to such brutality.

The young woman grew up learning exactly how to use her wonderful gift. And she used it well but she was also cautious.

The one constant in all of her bedtime stories was that the villain always got caught.

She was a villain who was determined to never get caught until she wanted it herself. She put all of herself into becoming good and to the rest of the village it worked but she always knew the truth. The truth about what happens when the lights go out and the streets are quiet and the world is at her mercy. The glorious, bloody truth.

The young woman soon found a prince charming of her own: a pauper with a wonderful smile who knew all her secrets. And he loved her and she loved him, and there was nothing else to be said between them.

And they lived happily ever after.

The end.
