"An urban fantasy of the finest quality. Fascinating and entertaining!" - Readers' Favorite

"Drowning might be like going to sleep. It would be nice to sleep forever - leave everything behind in the waking world."

Detective Saoirse Reilly commits to finding a missing child before dying by suicide. While investigating the kidnapping of Delaney Bascom, she is snared in the supernatural underbelly of Boston, Massachusetts. She will have to face her demons if she hopes to bring the girl home.

Reilly has the dubious support of Emrys Somerled, a forensic psychologist with a cellar full of secrets, and Domenico Alderisi, an impossibly youthful club owner with a bad habit. Meet these suspicious characters and more alongside Reilly as she begins to see the world for what it really is.

The blood moon is coming.

Will Reilly save the girl and find a reason to live?

TOP 5 FAVOURITE SCENES

1. Saoirse and Heuly carried on alone. It was still morning, as though no time had passed since they entered the mists. Heuly set the girl down to walk on her own two feet. — Chapter 0: When the Sun Always Shines

This scene illustrates the tender relationship between the Saoirse Reilly and Heuly. The ‘language barrier’ between these two characters who come from very different worlds also makes for some cute humor. Also, kid Reilly is my favorite.

2. “I don’t know what else you want to hear. I killed him. I’m not sorry, and I’m glad he’s dead. That’s all I’ve got, okay?” — Chapter 1: When Time Stands Still

This was the very first scene that I wrote for Dead Blood City so it holds a special place in my heart. I’m a therapist IRL and I wrote the character of Dr. Emrys Somerled to encapsulate everything that I hate about my own profession. (It’s complicated.) This scene also illustrates how a situation that looks relatively mundane from the outside can provoke a lot of stress, and even fear, for those actually experiencing it.

3. Green eyes trapped mine before my sole touched down. A chill rattled my spine. An unfamiliar man sat in a booth high on a platform in a towering alcove where Mass was once delivered. — Chapter 4: When Night Falls

Domenico Alderisi is one of my favorite characters in Dead Blood City, despite his many flaws. Many readers of early drafts of the book stated the same. He is a scene-stealer and this is our first meeting with him.

4. Somerled crouched in the now empty space, marking up the floor with chalk. He’d removed the robe and his sleeves were up past his elbows, revealing sinewy forearms. A glossy black bowl of water sat inside the concentric circles he had drawn. Four squat candles stood along the outer ring. He was filling in the spaces with odd symbols that might have been letters from some forgotten alphabet. — Chapter 10: When Needs Must

This whole chapter gives the reader a lot more insight into Somerled’s character. We really begin to suspect that he is more than he seems. He is another power player in the series and is pretty mysterious up to this point.

5. Ward turned away then to stare at the vanishing moon. Chirping insects and the faint creak of chains formed the backdrop for our conversation. A slight breeze cut through the humidity and something was decided behind his eyes. — Chapter 15: When the Trumpet Sounds

I have a real soft spot for Aiden Ward’s character. Even though his role in Dead Blood City is relatively minor, he really helps Reilly become the hero of the story. He has a very dark history but speaks about it with honesty and great insight.

***This may be cheating but I’m also going to include a favorite overall chapter. It’s Chapter 18: When the Sun Shines Again. You’ll have to read Dead Blood City to find out why it’s so good!

About Jo Denning:

Jo Denning is the author of the Saoirse Reilly series. She has spent her career as a behavioral health therapist supporting kids and teens who struggle with addiction. Jo began writing supernatural crime thrillers as a way of processing the traumatic things she has seen and heard. Her characters may be supernatural but their stories, their fear, and their pain are real. So, too, are their triumphs over impossible odds.

When she's not writing, Jo enjoys baking, drawing, and watching trashy reality TV. She makes her home somewhere in the contiguous United States with her husband, one fluffy cat, and one barely domesticated cat.
