Kidnapper

I slipped in the window quietly, not turning on a light. I had memorized the layout of the room. There would be a single mattress on the floor and a lamp to my right. I let my eyes adjust to the darkness, and I could see his clothes arranged in various piles that were itemized in stages of cleanliness. There was no bulb in the fixture on the ceiling. His bedsheets weren’t on properly, his pillow had no case, and the rod holding up the curtain was lopsided.

I pulled the rope from my duffle and reached to tie his hands. He was laying there, his hair slick from excess sweat. He moaned softly as if having a bad dream.

“Are you dreaming of being back in my basement?” I asked. I put the rope down and instead touched his forehead. He was warmer than he should be.

His eyes managed to flutter open.

“Jimena?”

“You weren’t in class,” I said. “And you didn’t come back to my house.”

“Your cooking made me sick.”

“I’m here to take you back,” I said. “I need you to get up.”

“I’m staying here.”

“You’re in no condition to contest me. I could just drug you again.” I didn’t think that was needed, though. He seemed unable to fight back. He’d dressed in shorts and a shirt but had kicked his sole blanket to the side.

“If you’re so keen on being near me, you’re welcome to stay.”

“Stay?”

“Yes, you can stay here.”

“Like a sleepover?”

“Sure.” He closed his eyes. He was inviting me to stay at his place? In his bed? My heart raced.

“This isn’t a trick? I can stay? I can… I can sleep in your bed?”

“Wherever you want.”

I laid next to him on my side, staring at him. My mind wondered if I had hallucinated his mutterings. Would he wake and refuse me? Have no memory of his invitation?

No. This was real. He had invited me into his bed, just has he had accepted a drink from me in the bar and gone home with me. I would not allow myself to believe otherwise. I was beyond giddy. This was all I’d ever wanted. I was being allowed into his life. I would never have needed to kidnap him if he’d simply done this from the start.

He’d shifted around while sleeping and was now facing me. His too perfect face started to annoy me. He was too attractive to actually want to be with me. People would mock us. I was too ugly to be with someone as handsome as him. He needed a blemish to mark him as an equally untouchable person.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my Swiss Army Knife. I ran the blunt side of the blade across his skin. He didn’t stir. His illness was so intense that he was in a feverish slumber. If his face wasn’t so perfect, we would be more compatible. And if he wasn’t going to stay in my basement all the time, it would be good for him to bear a mark that let others know he belonged to me.

I kept my blade sharp, so it took little effort to lance his flesh with it. I cut him, from an inch above his left eye, over his eyelid, down his cheek and stopped about half an inch from his mouth. His eyes popped open. They had that same oval iris of a cat from before.

“What the hell are you doing?” He hit me in the chest with both of his hands, knocking me off the mattress and onto the floor. He sat up and inspected his face. “What did you do?”

“I marked you.” I folded my knife and put it back in my pocket, securing it in case he tried to take it from me.

“What? Wh—” He kept one hand over his injured eye. With his good eye, he stared at me, but the expression on his face, aside from pain, wasn’t anger. He seemed… perplexed? Annoyed? He growled the kind of frustrated sound a parent makes at a child who’d spilled their drink by accident. He got up, stumbling from both the lack of depth perception and the fever he still endured.

About Nina Schluntz:

Nina Schluntz is a native to rural Nebraska. In her youth, she often wrote short stories to entertain her friends. Those ideas evolved into the novels she creates today.

Her husband continues to ensure her stories maintain a touch of realism as she delves into the science fiction and fantasy realm. Their three cats are always willing to stay up late to provide inspiration, whether it is a howl from the stray born in the backyard or an encouraging bite from the so called “calming kitten.”
