Sorcerer
Christaan De Rein's return to Liverpool does not go well, starting with the
fact that his trusted apprentice, Higgins, dies on the way. Then again, Higgins
dies a lot. Of course, Rein doesn't expect to be welcomed with open arms after
being banished for nine years, but a cryptic summons from The Musician herself
cannot go unanswered.
But when Rein arrives all is in chaos. People with fairy blood are turning up
dead. The Forum Magicae is undone and the Curators sieged.
And in another world altogether, where Earth is just a legend, a girl named
Niena and a cursed lyre hold the key to saving both realms. Or destroying them.
Reviews:
★★★★ "Reeves writes with both the
mechanical acuity of Shakespeare and the warm, wry wit of Terry
Pratchett...This is an exquisitely written start to a new fantasy series that
demonstrates the dangers of an irresistible distraction."- Red City
Review
★★★★"A
cleverly plotted fantasy adventure, thoughtfully written.' The Wishing Shelf
Book Awards"- The Wishing Shelf
★★★ 1/2"...vivid
and immersive, directly drawing the reader into the world and lettingus feel
the danger of a ship in stormy waters or the difficulty offinding a path
through the chaos of a London crowd.”- IndieReader
DELETED SCENE
The scene I am about to show you had survived almost to the main editor. I kept it in for so long because I felt it helped built the relationship between Niena and Titania, between granddaughter and grandmother. However, what it also did was cut the tension and slow down the pace of what was otherwise a very harried few chapters, undermining the climax I was building.
A snowball sails over Niena’s head. Looking back she sees only the frosted bark of pine trees. And of course, more snow.
“Missed,” she cries.
Titania’s voice echoes inside the girl’s head: Not for anything you did.
Despite the snow, the air is rather warm. Mornings in the mountains tends to shirk the traditional seasons. Even with the sun high in a cloudless sky, it will get cold again by nightfall. Cold enough to refreeze.
Ice and snow explode against stone, just under the girl’s feet.
Devil take my aim.
“Where –” Niena says, head swiveling. “I can’t…there’s nowhere to hide. Are you cheating?”
Of course. How else am I to win?
“You’re also packing your snowballs with ice!”
They are a lot easier to throw that way.
Niena wraps her arms around a young tree and lowers herself onto the opposite side of the rock. With the snow packing the sides, and the lone tree on its summit, the boulder would prove an adequate defense – in other circumstances. “Where is the fun in cheating?”
Winning is fun.
A snowball pelts Niena in her back.
Are you having fun losing?
Another strikes her just below the temple, and the girl staggers back.
“Mud,” she gasps, shaking her hands and hopping from one foot to another. “There’s muds and twigs, in my mouth.”
Plenty of fiber.
