When legends bite back.
Lemon Ziegler wants to escape rural
Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania to attend college―but that’s impossible now that
she’s expected to impersonate the town’s lake monster for the rest of her life.
Her family has been secretly keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, the famed (and
very fake) monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive for generations, all to keep the
tourists coming. Without Lemon, the town dies, and she can’t disappoint her
grandparents . . . or tell her best friends about any of it. That includes Troy
Ramirez, who has been covertly in love with Lemon for years, afraid to ruin
their friendship by confessing his feelings. When a very real, and very hungry
monster is discovered in the lake, secrets must fall by the wayside. Determined
to stop the monster, Lemon and her best friends are the only thing standing
between Devil’s Elbow and the monster out for blood.
For readers who enjoy Harrow
Lake by Kat Ellis, House of Hollow by Krystal
Sutherland, Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain,
and The Lake House by Sarah Beth Durst.
Book Dream Cast - Nicole M. Wolverton
If you’ve hung out on the Internet enough, you’ve seen the meme with the apples, demonstrating the degree of realism people can picture objects in their heads. My imagination is fairly vivid, and so when Gretchen McNeil, author of #murdertrending, Ten, and Get Even—and one of my writing idols—read A Misfortune of Lake Monsters and noted its “bone-chilling monster, witty banter, cinematic action, and a swoony romance,” I was delighted that the way I visualize things comes through on the page. My main characters are no exception—Troy, Lemon, and Darrin took on lives all their own.
Shae Smolik as Lemon Ziegler. Lemon is tall and blonde—and she’s a great swimmer, and so Shae would make an excellent Lemon. She looks powerful, which is something that’s important for Lemon, even though she doesn’t always know herself that she does have it in her to wield power and influence. She played Gracie Hickey in 18 episodes of the show Play by Play (2017-2019), among other roles over the years. Apparently she also sings, but Lemon can’t carry a tune in a bucket. Still, she’d be perfect for the role.
Asher Sheets as Troy Ramirez. Because Troy is loosely based on someone in my real life, I’ve had a very definitive picture of him in my head from day one. Troy is also pretty tall, with short—almost crew-cut—dark hair, with sharp features; someone whose entire face lights up when they really smile. And so Asher Sheets feels right to play Troy (photo stolen from his Insta page, btw). He’s played an uncredited student role on the Cobra Kai series for a few years, and weirdly, he played the young Aaron Hernandez in television mini-series in 2020. Troy could never in a million years be a murderer, but Asher would still make for a great Troy if A Misfortune of Lake Monsters were ever made into a film.
Drew Justice as Darrin Flanagan. Drew is way too tall to play Darrin, but maybe he can stand in a hole—Darrin is far shorter than Lemon or Troy. With a shock of curly-wavy light brown hair and easy smile, Troy is a bit of a goofball and carries himself with absolute confidence, and that’s why Drew works to play Darrin (even with the height issue). I mean, come on—he played Alfafa in The Little Rascals Save the Day (2014). That’s some Darrin-esque cred. I think he might currently be in college, so he’d have to un-retire, but A Misfortune of Lake Monsters would be a good cause.
What do you think? Are these who you picture as you read Lemon, Troy, and Darrin?
